Historical Context

Calcata Vecchia was gradually abandoned from the 1930s due to safety concerns, but in the 1960s a community of artists and intellectuals from Italy and abroad revived the village. Today, about 70 people live in the old town, many running art shops and workshops. The subsoil of Calcata is said to emit primeval energies, feeding local legends of occultism and witches.
